I’m in the process of rescuing a one year old male boxer named Zeke. How much should I expect him to eat? Should boxers have specific feeding times or would leaving a bowl with food out suffice?
Thank you for rescuing your new dog. When you feed your boxer, it is best to follow the feeding guidelines on your dog food bag. I believe 12 months of age is the time to start a dog on adult food. An all natural food that does not contain ground corn or animal byproducts is the best choice. Your dog will be more satisfied, receive better nutrition, shed less and make less mess in the back yard. A premium food like that does cost a little more initially, but they eat less in the long run, so it balances out price-wise and is a much healthier alternative for your dog.
As far as when to feed your dog, I believe it is best to feed a 1 year old boxer twice a day. That way he is on a schedule and his bathroom breaks become regular, too. Dogs thrive on schedules, so don’t be afraid to establish a routine for yours. Good luck with your new friend!
